Note: Over the next couple of weeks we've got a few guest bloggers from Lift Church writing on why prayer is important to them. This post is from Sandy Mortimer :)
As a Christian, we need to be connected to God. The best way we can do this is prayer. God created us with a desire to worship Him. He wants us to have a relationship with Him. He wants us to get to know Him. How can you get to know Him if you don’t spend time with Him? I know my husband quite well. The reason is because we have been married 37 years. If you spend time with the Lord, praying and seeking His face, then you will also get to know Him better (James 4:8).
Our Father loves us to spend time with Him. He loves it when we worship Him. The best way to start your prayer is with adoration. If you are a parent, and when your children were young, how wonderful was it when they came to you and wanted to spend time with you and tell you how much they loved you? Our Father is just like that. I get the picture of us just sitting at His feet and looking up into His beautiful face when I spend time in worship and adoration. Taking time to let Him know how much we love Him and that He is the most important person in our lives is what adoration is all about. The meaning of Adoration is, “the lifting of the heart and mind to God, asking nothing but to enjoy God’s presence” (from The Book Of Common Prayer). Jesus, when teaching His disciples how to pray the Lord’s Prayer, starts with adoration and ends with adoration (Luke 11:1-2).
Taking time out of our busy schedule can sometimes be hard. But when you do this, the Lord loves it. He sees the sacrifices you are making and rewards you for your devotion. “Be still and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10). The Lord wants you to be still so that He can talk to you as well. It’s good for us to have discipline in our lives. I once read a book called Too Busy Not To Pray by Bill Hybels. This is so true! The best thing you can do is to pray first thing in the morning. It’s amazing how much more you can fit into your day when you start it with the Lord (Matthew 6:33). Seeking His direction and plan for your day means that you will stay on the right track as well. God has a particular personal plan for each and every one of us (Jeremiah 29:11). Seeking His face and spending time with Him will help you to better understand what that plan is.
Praying, together with reading the Bible is also very important. Not only can God speak to you through the Bible, but when you pray and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the Word to you, the Bible can become so much clearer. The Bible is God’s word to us (John 1:1, 14). When we pray, God can answer through His written word. I believe that God loves to answer our prayers through the Bible. How better to get to know the Lord than to read His Word and pray for a fresh revelation of Himself each time you open the Bible (1 John 5:14-15)?
